Education

Students living in La Jolla are under the jurisdiction of the San Diego City Schools. Charter, parochial and private schools are also located throughout La Jolla and the surrounding communities. For higher learning, National University and the University of California-San Diego are located nearby. Several research institutes are also located near La Jolla, including Scripps Research Institute, Salk Institute, and Burnham Institute.

Economic Climate in San Diego County

Residents of La Jolla have access to many employment opportunities within the county of San Diego. The county is mainly supported by the defense, manufacturing and tourism industries; however, other industries of employment such as education, research, technology, management, and real estate also greatly contribute to San Diego’s economic climate.

Recreation

Golf is a popular pastime for residents of La Jolla as Torrey Pines Golf Course is located here. The Farmers Insurance Open (formerly the Buick Invitational), a PGA Tour event, is usually hosted here at the course. Other golf courses in the area include La Jolla Country Club, La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, Mission Bay Golf Course, Tecolote Canyon Golf Course, and Town Park Villas Golf Course.

If golf isn’t your game, then head straight to the coast and take a dip in the cool Pacific waters or go beachcombing along the shoreline. La Jolla has hosted rough water swimming events at La Jolla Cove in the past, but if you’re looking to wade out in gentler waters, head out to La Jolla Shores. La Jolla Shores is located at the foot of a residential area and is approximately one mile long, stretching from the cliffs north of La Jolla Cove to Black’s Beach just south of Torrey Pines State Park. Other popular beaches include Children’s Pool Beach—also known as Casa Beach—and Windansea Beach. Children’s Pool Beach is a popular spot for harbor seals, while Windansea is a well-known surf spot.

Attractions and Points of Interest

Many historical landmarks and buildings dot the landscape of La Jolla; in fact, there are 106 total landmarks located in the Torrey Pines and La Jolla areas alone. Residents may visit the Torrey Pines State Reserve, the coastal cottages at the Green Dragon Colony Site, La Jolla Public Library, the Grande Colonial Hotel, or the Mount Soledad Park and Memorial Cross, among a long list of other landmarks. Walking tours are also provided by the La Jolla Historical Society.

Downtown La Jolla is another excellent area to spend the day. Jewelry stores, boutiques, hotels and fine dining can all be found here. If you’re looking to shop, Prospect Street and Girard Avenue feature some excellent shops and dining districts.

If you’re looking to take in some art and culture, La Jolla has a branch of the Museum of Contemporary Art. The museum features a permanent collection of American and European art, a large collection of photographs, video works, works on paper, and sculptures. Residents may also visit the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, which features an impressive selection of music and art volumes.
